Best advice for getting exposed aggregate concrete done in nz
Exposed Aggregates are achieved by washing away the top layer of concrete to leave the surface layer of aggregate exposed. We use a few different companies but this mix is from Waikato Readymix Concrete. The special pebble mix is Awatoto and this is a full black oxide mix which is 5% (13kg) per cubic meter. Every region throughout New Zealand has its own unique mix and look. The steps and pavers done with the same mix is 500mm long x 800mm wide
Based in Hamilton, the process of the job is:
The concrete Driveway depth is at 100mm and pavers are done around 80mm.
So we will Dig out your driveway at 150mm to 200mm deep depending on how hard the ground is. If the area is soft mush we may dig deeper. As the saying goes ‘build a hard foundation’. After the boxing frames have been put up we’ll place the hard fill down and compact hard.
We use steel mesh for exposed concrete driveways but if you can’t afford it’s ok as it’s not required for code to have in your residential driveway in NZ but is is recommended. On any step hills or rises we always include mesh.
Ok time for the best bit: CONCRETE
Step 1: Box; Mix; Pour; Lay; Screed; Trowel. ...
Step 2: the Pebbles are already in the mix of Concrete which is delivered in the concrete truck. ...
Step 3: We Screed the right levels then finish Trowelling. ...
Step 4: Wait for the Concrete to Firm Up and spray with rugasol to keep the surface soft. ...
Step 5: Time to Expose Your Aggregate with hose or water blaste. ...
Next we give your exposed pebble an acid wash then we apply concrete sealer to bring out the colours of the pebble mix, giving it the wet look and bringing out that black oxide to make your house look amazing.
Step 6: Well done! Your Driveway/Path/Steps/Patio Is Complete. ✅
This driveway will look superb when finished with the decorative stone added around the pavers for nice frame then the landscaping begins which will look phenomenal when completed.
Please note in the photos, two of the pavers aren’t sealed. This is the difference of sealing exposed and not sealing. Note the colour, definitely worth sealing ay.
